From Victim To Valedictorian: Read The Novel Reborn Before The SAT, I Let Him Go And Took Back My Future!

Right before SATs, I took away the runaway proposal that Rachel Eden, our school's prom queen, had left for my childhood sweetheart Jonas Parker.

Jonas crushed the SATs and became star quarterback with a full ride to Harvard. But Rachel threw herself into the river in despair.

Years later, Jonas and I graduated from Harvard together and got engaged under our families' arrangement.

On my wedding day, Jonas helped me put on my wedding dress with his own hands.

Then he shoved me into a private room packed with drunk guys.

He just stood outside the door smoking while I screamed and begged for help:

"Rachel's parents died right before the SATs and she was having a complete breakdown.

"If you hadn't taken her letter, I would've been there to save her on exam day."

"If you hadn't screwed everything up, she wouldn't have died alone in that river."

Ten hours later, bruised all over and nearly unconscious, I jumped from the tenth floor.

When I opened my eyes again, I was watching Rachel Eden slip that elopement invitation into Jonas Parker's locker.

I grabbed my backpack and walked away.

This time, I'm going after my future alone.

My childhood sweetheart Jonas Parker came bursting into the classroom, completely out of breath.

The second he saw me, he grabbed my wrists and searched me from head to toe.

When he found nothing on me, he paused for a moment, then rushed to his own locker.

Rachel Eden's elopement invitation was lying there.

He didn't even glance at me, just shoved past me and ran out.

Rachel hadn't gotten far. With his quarterback’s height and long legs, Jonas caught up to her in just a few strides.

I stood at the stairwell, watching them embrace tightly down below.

Rachel struggled a bit, but after Jonas said a few words, she melted into his chest with tears streaming down her face.

I turned to leave, but I still caught the key parts:

"I promise you, I promise I'll never leave you for the rest of my life.

"Forget the SATs - I can always retake them later. You're the most important test of my life."

That's when I knew Jonas had been reborn too.

Rachel's voice was all sweet and soft:

"Aren't you afraid I'll hold you back?"

"Being with you... who cares about college anyway..."

I found it hilarious -

In his past life, Jonas had everything handed to him on a silver platter. He had no idea what it was like to have nothing.

He didn't remember how his Harvard degree had brought him connections and wealth. All he could think about was how I'd made him lose his dream girl.

Since he was so determined to choose Rachel instead degree, I hoped he wouldn't regret it.

While I was reviewing at home, Jonas texted me:

[Keep your mouth shut]

I calmly replied: [OK]

He didn't need to tell me. This time around, I was never getting involved in his life.

Our families were neighbors.

I'd just finished practice tests and was taking out the trash when I saw Jonas being dragged out of a car by his parents.

Mrs. Parker smacked him upside the head:

"Look at you now! Running off to elope right before SATs! Do you have any idea what you're doing?!"

Jonas fought back:

"Mom! Dad! Rachel and I are truly in love!"

"You stupid bastard!"

Mr. Parker slapped him across the face.

When they saw me, his parents quickly pulled me over:

"Oh thank God, Ruby! We feel so much better with you here! This brat has fallen for some girl at your school and won't stop whining about eloping. You need to talk some sense into him!"

Ever since we were kids, Jonas had always been the spoiled rich playboy, while I was every parent's dream good daughter.

Whenever Jonas stepped out of line, I was always the one trying to keep him in check.

Right now, he whipped around to glare at me, his eyes flashing with rage:

"You again! I knew it! You snitched to my parents again! Why can't you mind your own damn business? Why do you always have to mess with my life?!"

My past life flashed through my mind - him smoking outside the door, smirking while a dozen men held me down.

I shuddered and quickly backed away:

"Uncle, Aunt, I've got a ton of homework waiting for me. This is Jonas's personal business - I'm staying out of it this time!"

Jonas froze.

After all, I'd always rush in to handle his messes at times like this.

Now I was turning around and running. He opened his mouth to say something, but I was already long gone.

Over the next few days, I heard from my parents that Jonas was being kept locked up at home by his parents. His phone had been taken away and he wasn't allowed to contact Rachel.

I just smiled.

Looked like even without me, his parents would drag him back on track.

But whatever - I just needed to focus on myself.

If the SAT questions stayed the same, I figured this time the state's top scorer is got to be me!

But I couldn't afford to let my guard down. I did ten practice tests every day and going over math formulas on my walk home

But while I was walking and studying, completely absorbed, a bunch of guys suddenly dragged me into an alley.

"What are you doing! Let go of me!"

They tore apart my backpack and ripped at my clothes.

My mind flashed back to those horrifying ten hours before I died in my past life.

Just as despair washed over me, seven or eight cameras clicked their shutters at me, and a familiar figure pushed through the crowd to stand before me.

Jonas looked down at me, waving the photos in his hand:

"Say a word and your nudes will be all over TikTok by tonight."

"Jonas... this is illegal!"

I hugged my knees to my chest, trembling all over.

Jonas just shrugged:

"So what? What's the fun in living such a boring, predictable life?

"Rachel told me that when you're young and wild, you gotta do wild things."

A trace of pride showed in his smile:

"Ruby, you've never truly loved anyone. You wouldn't get it."

Did I never truly loved anyone?

I hugged my knees, curled up in the corner.

How could I not know?

I loved him...

"Yo, boss man, there's nobody else around anyway, and this girl's pretty hot, so how about..."

A dozen guys were eyeing me like they were already undressing me in their heads.

"BAM!"

Jonas slammed his foot into the guy's knee, dropping him to the ground.

"Say one more word and you can kiss that leg goodbye."

The guy saw the look in Jonas's eyes and immediately started slapping himself:

"I ran my mouth! I deserve to die!"

Jonas glanced down at me:

"I'm taking Rachel to Hawaii for a week. I better not hear you telling my parents anything you shouldn't."

A week?

That would mean missing the SATs completely.

A stack of photos landed at my feet as one of the guys flashed a disgusting grin:

"Here, keep a copy for yourself. Shit, what a body."

It started raining, and soon I was alone in the alley.

I picked up the photos with shaking hands and almost tore them apart.

But I stopped myself at the last second.

No...! I can't destroy them...!

These are evidence.

No matter how much I hated it, I had to keep them!

Gritting my teeth, I stood up and stumbled out of the alley, clutching the photos.

Once I became the state's top scorer, these would be my evidence for the police!

I studied desperately for a week, and finally SAT day arrived.

As soon as I got out of the car, I saw Mr. and Mrs. Parker waiting frantically at the entrance, constantly making phone calls.

A few minutes later, another car pulled up and Jonas was dragged out by two bodyguards.
